I've been working on a PowerPoint presentation for the past few days. I saved it and everything (it was in my downloads). Today - it's gone. I know I saved it too. I searched in the directory for unsaved files and it wasn't there either. What happened to it? Can I somehow recover it?

Try using “File Explorer” and see if the file is in another directory. Personally I would not store anything I am working on in the “Download” directory. There are setting that my clean/purge your download directory automatically. If this is a work computer there may be a job that does this without your knowledge,

Probably you are using Windows 7 at least. Have you tried windows search option? Just open windows explorer/file explorer and type PowerPoint file name (hope, you can remember) and press enter key to search, that time you select all drives and it may help you to locate the file even it is in .BAK format.
