How do you mean? Are you looking to protect your Windows systems, in general? There’s a lot you can do on the OS and network sides. Your best bet is to run the latest version of Windows, use Windows Firewall along with a solid anti-malware program, and ensure Windows and third-party software patches are applied as they come out.

Generally, latest software and OS patch can protect the system specially for security reason while port 445 is used for SMB. Mechanism may be changed for different OSs. Like Kevin mentioned, run the latest version of your OS and a good firewall program. If not the Windows version, there are a few other free ones like ZoneAlarm. If the exploit is know, most vendors will try to patch is ASAP. So staying up to date for protection is critical.

What are you trying to protect endpoint? network? For endpoint I guess antivirus would be enough. For Network either use opensource IPS like snort, pfsense. Or use paid firewalls like Sonicwall, WiJungle etc.
