Hi guys The scenario: we have more than 500 switches around the camp, all of them cisco switches, and everytime we have a thunderstorm the poe features in most of the switches dies, stops working, only data can go through, so my question is: its possible that after the thunderstorm the switch disable the poe feature or it burns leaving the switch not good for poe but good for data, we also use the cisco phones and they need the poe feature to working...any help please or suggestion...
Yes its absolutely possible to lose the poe capability, only way to avoid is to make sure you Network Cabinet has proper grounding. Atleast the power source for the switch should be properly grounded.
I had faced similar problem even some of the ports were not detected and the POST in the switch was failed. Grounding is quite important.
oh thanks, one of the measures we are implementing is to shut the ports that are not been in use, we some switches with some of the ports dead and others not dead, i dont know if is there a feature on the switches that auto-disable the poe capability, but in my case i think that the ground is an issue over here and need to be review asap...cheers
