PDF files issue

I'm trying to recover a folder with some critical data that was damaged or corrupted, likely by a virus. It’s a 10GB folder that contains PDF documents. None will open, and each report that the format of the file is invalid and/or does not match the extension. I'm looking for the best tools or services, free or fee-based, that will give me the best chance of recovering at least some of this data.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

You need to restore the files from backup to be able to gain access to them again or if you don’t have a backup, then hopefully you have a trace of the virus left so you can pay the $300 ransom to unencrypted the files. The ransomware that is doing the rounds is Cryptolocker and this scans local and network files and will encrypt a variety of files that it is configured to find.

There is a good write-up about it here:

Perhaps this authoritative source will also help you.

What is the current file extension of the files, is it still PDF? Is it possible that the default program associated with this extension got changed? What program or app is giving the error, Adobe Acrobat Reader or the full version of Adobe Acrobat or is it trying to open with another program?

I was reading an article yesterday (sorry, don't recall the site) relating to an issue like you are describing that suggested running the auto update in Windows 10 and MSOffice, you might also try your PDF reader app.
