A lot of unknowns to know for sure. Things like background apps can choke your system at time like virus scans as well as auto updates to apps or the OS running without you knowing. Another thing is total RAM, video RAM and graphics card. Have any upgrade been made or are you still running the base model? Some games today are very demanding. What monitor and screen resolution are you running?  and the games you are trying to run. Is it all games or just a select few.

Best advice might be to play neither 1440p nor 4K games. But it's impossible to say without knowing more about the pauses (which might be normal for this laptop on some games). Give a description of what's being run to bring about the pauses.

Which model is your laptop? Have you added any hardware to it, e.g., more storage?

Type msconfig.exe from Search bar and uncheck all unnecessary services (Startup tab) and then restart the system. Check either this can be helpful.

When you are playing game(s), open Task Manager & check how many processes are running there. Very carefully kill the processes that are not relevant to games/Systems. Also make sure there is no Delay start of any system services.

I see that issue in Win 8 and Win 10. Both Win 8 and Win 10 do updates supposedly when the system is supposed to be idle and it is not. This also affects A/V and Antimalware products too. You can go into the update settings and change them to something that may be more user friendly. Also since I saw that you are using a laptop, is the video card sharing memory with the system, or is it totally operate? If it is sharing memory, you might consider upgrading to more memory. Lastly if the games that you are playing use flash player in them, then they are very subject to disk fragmentation. This is something that I see in some of the games, is that the games will slow down, or hesitate, and then I know that it is time to clean up and defrag my system.

I can vouch for the update issue. Can usually play Skyrim with no issues. Last night a bunch of lag, delays when trying to save games and similar problems. When I quit and went to shutdown my system I got the options to apply updates and restart or shut down. That means a Win10 download was probably the culprit for my issues. So much for the download not effecting my system while active with other tasks.

If the updates are related to security, then you must go for that. You can check each details before going for update.
