PST folders
I turned on Outlook and out of the blue it said .pst file couldn't be found. it then created a new one in a new location. I tried to find the original but it wasn't there. I have tried the SCANPST function and nothing came of it as working from the new file and old file wasn't overwritten. I tried using '%appdata%microsoftoutlook' from the Start button search and couldn't see anything but small .pst files I have lost loads of emails, calendar entries etc. I have no idea where to look or how to get them back. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

windows 7, outlook 2007 small business edition

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Do a search for .pst files and incude hidden folders. unless you had your pst file on a network drive it should be there on your pc.

Are your other files in the proper place (i.e. My Documents, My Pictures, etc)? If not, it sounds like you are having a problem with your profile. Usually a restart will fix this issue.

Yes all files (My Docs, My Pics etc) are in right place, the things missing are on Outlook itself....my emails/ folders / contacts / diary appointments

hi, thanks, i tried this before and it wasnt theree, only the new file. i tried the SCANPST on this file and there was nothing underneith, so it wasnt an overwrite. it seems like the file was never there or was in a completely different place which i cant find. i have looked on outlook backup files and old emails and people contacts updates are logged there, but i dont know where the full personal profile is... Am at a loss as to what to do next....

If it is not located on your computer anywhere than it was either deleted or somehow moved. If your computer data is not being backed up then you are out of luck. If it is being backed up you will need to request a restore.

The usual location (unless on a network drive) is C:Docs and SettingsLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook. Make sure that you can view hidden files and folders.

Path on Vista/Windows 7 is c:usersusernameappdatalocalmicrosoftoutlook. There is a freeware app called Recuva (from Piriform) that does a great job of finding files shy something heavyduty. You could try it to see if you accidentally deleted it.

Since normally the Outlook folder is inside the Documents folder, Has the Outlook folder been hidden? If so, unhide it.via properties. If it has been deleted, you can use recently deleted to try and recover it or I prefer to use Recuva from Piriform to restore it. Recuva has the option to show hidden and system files. If it has been dragged and dropped somewhere then you will have to hunt for it.

Recover your PST FILE through old version

    1. Browse to the folder where your .pst file was located in.
    2. The error message should indicate the path or otherwise look in default folder locations like: C:Users<User Name>(My)DocumentsOutlook Files)
    3. Right-Click on this folder(‘Outlook Files‘).
    4. From the menu choose; ‘Restore previous versions’
    5. Double click on the most recent folder listed to see its contents.
    6. If the folder contains your missing .pst file, you can select and copy it and then paste it back into its original folder location.

SOLVED IT! I had the same problem. Here's how I fixed it.

    1. Open your Control Panel and search for Mail.
    2. Click on the Mail link
    3. Select the button Data Files
    4. You should see a tick in a blue circle and beside it this:
My Outlook Data File(1) and the location: C;\Users\Windows\Documents\Outlook Files\Outlook.pst
    5. On the tab above that line click on Add.
    6. This will create a new line in the window that shows this:
My Outlook Data File(1) and the location: C;\Users\Windows\Documents\Outlook Files\My Outlook Data File(1).pst
    7. Navigate to C:\Users\Windows\Documents\Outlook Files in Windows file explorer and you will see the new file named: My Outlook Data File(1).pst
    8. Rename the My Outlook Data File(1).pst file to Outlook.pst
    9. Start Outlook. It should work.

Try showwing the hidden files and folders in Windows 10
Open File Explorer from the taskbar.
Select View > Options > Change folder and search options.
Select the View tab and, in Advanced settings, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives and OK.
