In Client Access software, there are two sessions should be opened always. Once is the user session and another one is printer session. Is there any other way or software that only one session can be used? Why AS/400 session can not print documents in the default printer in the computer without a printer session?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

If you are having issues with reaching maximum device sessions you need to make the device name unique in the CA config. You can also change the system value to turn off the auto-cong ( QAUTOCFG ) or limit the number of sessions with ( QLMTDEVSSN ) .  You may have to delete some device descriptions if you have reached you max.  They may start with a name similar to QPADEV00xx.

Client Access sessions can be set up in a number of ways. In the config of a session there is a flag that instructs the system to keep device names unique, thus allowing multiple sessions from 1 Client Computer.
On the system i there is system Value QLMTDEVSSN that controls how many session a user can have.

May be my question has been misunderstood. Actually my question is about the printer session. Why the user needs to open the printer session while printing? can't we print directly in the default printer without configuring a printer session?

Printing directly to your default printer (WINDOWS or PC-OS) could be possible from iSeries without having to configure a printer session on PC. You would have to configure a Remote OUTQ on i to use it.
Have not tried to do such a setup yet.

How is the printer connected to the PC? is it USB, LPT or does it have an IP address? If there is no network connection the you need to establish one using the CA session for printing to occur.

    Todd,

The printer is connected via USB and LPT also. Do you have any other ways to do that?

In order to print from an AS/400 OUTQ to your PC printer, you need the printer set up as a network printer. It can be the same one used as the windows default. You just need to establish that IP connection. The downside, doing it this way, is you can assign just 1 IP address. If it is not setup via a network connection then you will need to use Client Access. This let's you establish the connection by defining the IP address to the correct AS/400. I personally have 5 printer sessions defined so I can print from our 2 local and 3 remote AS/400's.
