I'm looking to purchase a server but the quote's I'm getting from some local IT companies are astonishingly high, I understand that its business, but at the same time its not going to be anything crazy happening. So I was planning on getting a server off newegg or someplace but just trying to figure out how powerful it needs to be without over paying.
It needs to handle the following:
  • 100-200 users for active directory
  • Basic File storage mostly just word/excel files
  • MySQL Wordpress intranet for quick company updates to employee's
  • 1 remote log-in access
  • There will be no virtual machines
  • As for redundancy it will be hosted off site
I cant imagine that I would need a $6000, as quoted, for something as simple as this.
This is the specs of a server I'm looking into purchasing myself.
Intel Xeon E3-1240 v5 (3.5ghz) quad core, 8GB DDR4, 1TB Drive HDD. This is going for $1189. I would probably buy a SSD for the main installation location, windows server 2016, and purchase another 1TB HDD to raid it.
Even with the server cost + windows server license + cal license + the SSD and additional HDD i'm looking at around $2500, which makes more sense than what local places are quoting.
If I need anything additionally please let me know.

Software/Hardware used:
windows server 2016

That quote may seem high but what is actually included in that? Are they including installation and set up charges? Are they providing more storage and memory that what you mentioned? more details on their quote would be helpful.

As you mentioned, 100-200 users and Word/Excel files will be used for work. 1TB HDD is ok, but you can consider the RAM as 4GB. Though you mentioned for SSD. For your purpose, you can look for Dell PowerEdge T20 or Lenovo ThinkServer TS140. However there is also HP Proliant Microserver Gen8. It is better to contact an authorized dealer for particular manufacturer like HP/Dell etc. and then take your decision.
