Not sure what version Word you have but you can right-click one of the tabs like FILE or HOME and check the settings to see if the ribbon is hidden or the quick access tool bar .

Another thing is if the ribbon menu is missing, in Word 2010,  on the right by the icons to control the window is an arrow icon next to a blue circle with a ?.  This up down arrow hide the menu ribbon as well.

As understood correctly, probably the menu bar with the file/edit/insert etc. is not displayed. This may happen for corrupted Normal.dot file (this file is responsible for that). You can try to restore by the following way, search for the file 'Normal.dot'. If found rename the file like 'OldNormal.dat' (don't change extension) and restart MS word again. Or if there is a version of word that has a menu and toolbars. If only toolbars are missing, but you still have the menu bar (the one that says File Edit View, etc.), then right-click on the bar of menu & choose standard and formatting from the list of toolbars. However version of word is necessary here. For your assistance, please link here: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Show-or-hide-the-ribbon-in-Office-d946b26e-0c8c-402d-a0f7-c6efa296b527
