    If the laptop won't boot, the value of its disk drive can depend on what the boot problem is.

    If the problem is that the disk drive failed badly, then the data might effectively be gone forever. It's possible that you might pay a recovery service enough to get some, most or even all data back, but that's a cost decision only you can make.

    If the problem is in the motherboard or some none-disk component, you can probably just remove the drive and use some other PC or laptop to access the data. You might pick up a $10 USB adaptor (either IDE or SATA depending on the drive) from eBay, Amazon or elsewhere that allows you to plug the drive into most other computers.

    I used a USB adapter to save a friend's collection of music for her DJ gigs. The laptop would not boot at all, and I had to run a repair against the hard drive twice before I could get in to her files - but I managed to recover everything she needed
