    It's hard to be sure without knowing what version of Excel you are using. As later Excel versions came out, different file formats could be considered to be an "Excel file". The OS you're using could also be needed.

    Best thing to do might be simply to download/install LibreOffice. You could then process .ODS files naturally as well as most "Excel files" regardless of what format Excel used. And if necessary, you could open the .ODS file with LibreOffice Calc and save it in your chosen "Excel file" format. (I haven't used Excel since first installing LibreOffice, or more accurately, since installing the earlier versions that preceded LibreOffice.)
