Are you logging out before doing the disconnect? It may be that you can only have one active connection and it won't connect because the other still has a phantom connection.

Have always just disconnected. This just started about 2 months ago maybe 3, I believe if I could access the internet after disconnecting I would be able to reconnect to the VPN. I don't know what it blocking the access to the internet but rebooting seems to clear the problem

Check if there wireless/ physical adapter disables IPV6. It is likely that, when you disconnect from the VPN it tries to use IPV6 instead of IPV4.

You could always ask your company IT department to take a look. Maybe something has that you are unaware of.

The IPV6 still has a checkmark in the box. this doesn't happen all the time but I would say about 90% of the time

Believe it or not I am the IT dept and I have not changed anything and I have not heard anyone else having this issue? That doesn't mean it is not happening to others just that they might not be trying to access the internet after disconnecting from VPN. We were using PPTP up until last Sept then switched to SSTP worked flawless until maybe 2 - 3 months ago

One more thought, if the vpn is using the default gateway on the network, it may be causing for disconnection. Not sure exactly where in the connection properties its listed but it may be causing glitch in the default gateway assigned to this IP.

Or you've got something installed there (just guess) which is causing the issue.

One of the first things to check is always the set of updates that happened just before a problem initially appears. Going back now after waiting "2 - 3 months" might be messy.

Could be updates to Microsoft networking, the VPN app or anything related.

Or it could be disconnecting improperly. That might not be completing the work of reestablishing the basic configuration. Not easy to tell. What VPN app are you using?

Sorry for the slow response, I have been out sick for a few days.

Yes I have was thinking it might have something to do with Win updates, I am going to setup another laptop and slowly add win updates till it breaks see if I can find which one or more maybe causing the issue.

I am using the windows built in SSTP VPN

Keep in mind, when updating Windows make sure updates must be completed their full circle. Also make sure no partial/ pending update is there.
