I have just started working at a place where I am the most tech savvy person here and can manage the computers but know nothing about servers and exchange, We have just got new internet and virgin media router, we have a local exchange server, and another server that handles the DHCP and files. I have set the routers IP to the same as the old router, switched off DHCP and forwarded ports 25 and 110, but still cannot get external emails, either in or out. Internal emails and the internet work fine. I cannot access the old router to copy the settings, not sure if this is a router setting or exchange. Can anyone provide any suggestions?

There several settings for a router to make this mechanism. As you are a new comer, find the model/manufacturer name of the router (old & new both) and navigate their corresponding web sites help page to get an idea for configuration. Or you can hire an expert who can configure the same for one time and you have to write down all the settings for future use.
