New Network Card Unable to take static IP assigned to previous faulty Card

I have a server that had static IP configured, what happened is that the Network Card got faulty and had to be replaced. so I bought a new network card and replaced the faulty one, now when I try and configure the IP address on the new card I get an error message saying that the IP address has been assigned to another network card. I then installed the faulty network card again and configured it to obtain its IP address from DHCP and then rebooted the server but it still gives me the same error message whenever I try to enter the static IP on the new Network Card.

What is the server’s operating system ?
Have you tried uninstalling the damaged card from the OS before removing it.

Have you tried releasing/resetting your DHCP pool? It sounds like something on your network is caching that IP.

Yes, that would be a good thing to try, but if the message is really "the IP address has been assigned to another network card", I guess that message is comming from the OS and not from the network.

it could also be the network DHCP server has assigned that IP to teh MAC address of teh faulty card. try Mshen's Idea and release teh DHCP pool, and then restart. You might have to shut down more of teh network if the problem persists, depending upon the size and business impact this might or might not be feasable.

Err, apologies to kevin, it's his post I was referencing about the releasing of teh DHCP pool. I't Wednesday, and I'm brain dead due to finals in school plus working additional hours with a guy out at work.

I would check the registry for the old NIC and see if it is stuck. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServices{Adapter}ParametersTcpip] I think is the location. I have had this problem with servers before and that was the problem. You may also try booting into safe mode, then check the device manager and remove any NICs that are not in your server.
