BRMS is one of several available tools to help manage the save process. They use native save calls under the covers. These are tools to help schedule, track and manage what is saved, when, what tape, where the tape is and a host of other related tasks. In addition to the restoration of a system or select parts if ever required (where the hug tiem benefit comes in to play for these tools).

Without these tools, manual process are required for some of the tasks and/or writing programs to do these things for you along with the tracking.

It may be slightly (i.e. a minute or two on a full system save type of thing) longer using these tools, but not enough that it should be a determination on using them.

I was always under the Impression that BRMS saves are slightly faster as they use native API's under the cover. Once I went BRMS the ease and comfort of the product did not compell me to go back to the Save commands.
