If it’s damaged by a virus you can run many AV tools that may help recover the data. Tools like Malwarbytes, MWav, Hitman Pro and others. If it’s a hardware problem you may not be able to fix it your self. These repairs need to be done in a controlled, dust free clean room. As soon as you open the drive you expose it to the elements and may cause even more damage.

Damaged, meant in what form, is it not readable/ virus affected/ physically damaged/ data cable is not working. If it is not readable, try to insert it on another pc/ laptop and check if it works. If not try to run chkdsk on the same. If you have backups, you can free to go for format the disk. If it is virus affected, try to scan/ remove the same with a free toll called 'MWAV'. If it is physically damaged, carry it to a good hardware repair shop. Or if it is still now under warranty, contact the original vendor for more help.

You never know if it is physical damage or logical damage. In the case of logical, you might be able to recover most of the data. But in case of physical damage, you will have to seek an expert's help.

If the device logically damaged/ has bad sectors, you can try with any 3rd party tool (cost/ free) to recover data but no one can assure to recover data with full satisfaction.
