Phones have usually a way to reset them to factory settings, which apart from resetting all of the settings and configurations to the default value, also removes all of the installed apps.

    I would recommend doing that.

It looks like the phone has an Android OS.

Uninstall suspicious and newly installed applications as the problem could be coming from an app. Its best to do this with a system app uninstaller and root access.

Install a good antivirus like 360 security , Stopbadapp , AVG , Ghost Push Trojan Killer, Avast or Malwarebytes and scan the phone.

If it sends messages you may have to do the factory reset like Carlos mentioned as a last resort.

Please don't put any anti virus on your mobile or any other phone. Because, modern OS of mobile has built-in mechanism that prevents virus strongly either it is iOS/ Android/ Windows.
Next your problem, you can uninstall your unnecessary apps and check what services are running in background. First, you can uninstall all apps including anti virus (if loaded) except system apps. Then check either it works or not,. If not, you can switch off the phone for few days. Then again switch on & check if the problem is solved. And yes last resort, you can do a reset (hard/ soft) to overcome this issue. But be careful, take all necessary backups to a laptop or another media of your phone (photos/ folders/ contacts/ sms etc.) & then go for a reset.

Smart phones may not get a traditional virus but they do get them. There are many security sites that have articles you can read up on.

If this is an Android phone, check out this link on Norton's Security site.   how to remove a virus from an Android phone

Please keep in mind, and it is better not to transact any monetary related transactions on your phone like fund transfer/ net banking checking etc. Try to avoid to do so. There are several anti virus company that claim they can remove viruses from mobiles but truly there are no concept of viruses especially on mobile phones. Just keep in mind, always remove unnecessary files/ images on the phone's gallery. Also don't copy videos that are so big. If it is needed, after use, please remove them immediately. Also don't install unnecessary apps to load memories. Check background apps & stop whatever is not necessary, but be careful about system apps services. Also don't open websites that have too many popups. You can configure browser which is installed on your phone. And yes, always update phone's OS to keep the phone in good working condition.
