.msi software file

.MSI files
I purchased a piece of software that was subsequently downloaded and successfully installed to my computer. I realized immediately that there was no executable (.exe) to start the installation. My question is this. Why did this software supplier facilitate a paid download for this software without a visible .exe file?  Was there any advantage on their part to sell and download this software in that manner?

MSI files are installer packages. Microsoft encourages the creation of installer packages in that format against normal executable files.

MSI installers generate an uninstallation sequence automatically, and they help Windows keep the installation database integrity, among other things.

Also, not sure if that is still true on newer Windows Server versions, but in the past, if you wanted to install an application on client computers via GPO, you needed an MSI installer (a normal executable file wouldn’t work).
