So, I'll get right to my question. I would like to move all of the files from my Windows 10 account over to a USB drive. What's the best way to do that? The reason I'm doing this is because I need to free up space on my desktop. Is this a good idea?

If you are referring to a large capacity external USB drive most will come with an application that lets you do a backup of you files or create an image file so you can recover you system and files. As long as you have been keeping a good methods for storing your data it should not be a big issue. If you are not sure where all your data files are you are better off just backing up the entire system to be safe. Depending on the amount of data you are looking to save or back up this can take a few minutes to hours depending on the USB speed (2.0 vs 3.0)

You should just be able to plug in your drive and manually copy everything over from your desktop. Just keep in mind that you might have files elsewhere on your system. You might consider browsing around in the various folders. Just click Start and enter c:\ to see what's what. Repeat this for other drives or partitions you might have.

You can keep backups in an external HDD/high capacity flash drive. This is OK, but also if possible, keep another copy of those files in other internal hard disk drive if any.
