A friend of mine sent me a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that I need to work on. But when I tried to open it, I got this message: "Excel found unreadable content. Do you want to recover the contents of the workbook? If you trust the source of the workbook, click yes. I clicked yes but everything was still gone. What should I do?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Ask you friend what the expected file size is. Make sure it’s the same size as he sent and nothing strange happened in the process. Also check with him to make sure the Excel file is in a format you can use if you are running different versions of the software. Have him check his version for corruption, if not then have him send it again and see if you have the same issue,

Best way to ask your friend to send the same file again after checking thoroughly by his side. Or try to open the Excel file by making it 'Read-only'. Click on the ‘Office button’ and select ‘save’ for new document or ‘save as’ for previously saved document. Now click Tools > General Options. Then click on the ‘Read-only’ checkbox to make document read-only. Next open a new file, & copy everything from the corrupted Excel file to this new file. Save this file & try to open it again.

One more thing open MS Excel in Safe mode & then try to open the same file and check what happens. Here is a link from Microsoft for Safe mode: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/open-office-apps-in-safe-mode-on-a-windows-pc-dedf944a-5f4b-4afb-a453-528af4f7ac72
