Mainframe applications to run on servers

30 pts.
Would I be able to run say banking applications currently on mainframe platform on servers? If it is possible, what are the adjustments and risks involved?

Have you received a reply to your question on running banking applications on servers rather than the mainframe?  I work for Micro Focus and specifically work with our ISV partners, many of whom run their banking solutions both on the mainframe and offer distributed versions of their solution.  If you are looking for the technical feasibility then a conversation with one of our engineers is a great idea.

    You may not be able to run the exact same code, but yes you could run a bank or any application on servers.
    The thought process should be: Does software exist that will do what I want, or do I have to write it all from scratch? Is the server powerful enough to handle the required processing? (Amount of data, Number of users, number of transactions). Who needs access to the data.
    A complete ROI analysis must be done.

    Since mainframes are servers, the question is a little odd. Assuming the question asks only about PC-style servers (rather than all other kinds of servers), it's almost guaranteed that the same applications would not run.

    In some cases, a vendor might have versions of some application that run on mainframes and PC-servers; but it usually wouldn't make much sense. Applications that are nowadays specifically created for mainframes would generally expect the capabilities of a mainframe to be available.

    You could rearchitect the application to move from mainframe to distributed servers, but there are several key considerations to weigh first (via Joe Clabby, Clabby Analytics):

    Reworking your business process flow to allow other applications and workflows to work with the data now located on distributed servers;

    Reevaluating your security precautions;

    Accounting for data proximity if the application moves to another server;

    Performance decreases, in terms of input/output processing;

    Licensing cost changes.
