Hi! I am a long time AS400 programmer. Because, of the lack of marketing for the AS400--the job opportunities have plumitted. I would like to revamp me career--but, don't know what direction to go. Can someone stir me in the right direction?
I have work on this trail some years ago. I have buy a visual studio licence (educational, 80% rebate) and a VB book and spend 2 weeks of hollidays to learn VisualBasic.
same thing for Visual C.
I have then learn "on the fly" VB script & java script when building some html pages. these thechnologies needs only some hours to be understood. A little more to write. the step was easy with the visual interdev, available in visual studio.
To learn a new technology, the key is using a powerfull toolset (and the books written for this toolset). for me it was visual studio. Have a look to eclipse. or websphere. or php (php is free, it's light, it's a school target, it's sure, you will find easily tools and support, look at the forums).
I had an opportunity to learn ABAP (SAP langage), and I now also practice ABAP.
And I have not lost my job : now I practice dayly html, vb, xml, xsl, rpg3, rpg ile, sql, abap, sapscript.
First step I suggest is to be top level with ILE and SQL by reading in details
SC41-5606-04 ILE Concepts (190 pages )
SC09-2508-02 ILE RPG reference (733 pages)
SC09-2507-02 ILE RPG Programmer's guide (465 pages )
SG245402 "Who Knew You Could Do That with RPG IV"
.. SQL reference
SQL is the way you will discuss with other-technologies-programmers(ABAP, Java, VB, VC, ...) this will unlock the door.
First you are no longer an AS400 programmer.
Do not refer to yourself in an old context.
I'm sure you would not call yourself a
System 38 programmer which is where it all
began. You are probably an Iseries programmer
on a senior level, Make sure all your qualifications are shown cl,sda, rlu.
Everything is computerized today and the more
keywords you use the better. Your resume
may never be seen by a human if it does not
have a enough keyword checks. Any proffesional
software you have experience in should be listed. Much more leg work is required today
to get a job in your proffession. Do not rely totally on recruiters to get you a job.
Get involved in ISERIES groups as many jobs are never advertised. Good Luck
