In Linux, would there be a way that I could find out how long a file has been opened. My co-worker and I think that a process is running some long operations on several files but we're not sure which ones. Can someone help?

Probably you asked for elapsed time. For this purpose, first of all find PID or Process ID for the same job/task. You can use pidof command to know that. Next after getting PID, you can use ps -p <PIDNO> -o etime and press Enter key.
