It depends on the laptop and if it is a monitor or a television. For most cases an HDMI cable will work. But without know the make and model of the devices you are referring to we can only guess.
In genera most newer laptops may also have a DisplayPort. This can be used to connect external display devices that utilize a DisplayPort cable. If your external display uses VGA, DVI or HDMI instead, you can also get a DisplayPort adapter cable, allowing you to connect your VGA, DVI or HDMI display to the laptop’s DisplayPort.

It depends on what type of laptop, type of monitor, and the I/O ports on both.

For an additional monitor, generally it can be used HDMI for connecting purpose. However, more information like laptop make/ model, port nos or type of ports etc. is required.

Moreover, almost all laptops can output video to the both the laptop's LCD & the external display, or restrict output to only one of them. Laptops with this feature can toggle between the two modes when the appropriate function key is pressed. Some laptops may use DVI connection.
