Issues with recorded sound on video

I plugged in an external microphone to my video camera and it has only recorded white noise. Could my video camera have recorded the actual sound that I wanted without the white noise, or will it just be on the microphone? I am desperate to recover the actual noise as it's a recording of a play.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Try using the mic on another device like a computer and see if you get the same result. It could be a defective mic. Another possibility is the mic may not have been inserted all the way. I have had issues with them where you think they are in all the way, but not. I have had issues when a headset was only providing sound out of one ear piece. Found out the plug was not firmly seated all the way. Push it a bit farther and voila ! Stereo sound out of both. Could be a similar issue if it was a stereo mic.

Probably not. If you used an external mic, it most likely will be the only audio track on the video. What make and model video camera did you use? It may be a slight possibility that some high end video recorder can record multiple audio tracks but I cannot be positive.

What make/ model / manufacturer of your video camera? Is the external microphone matched this device? Is there other camera for this type, if any? You can check this microphone with this other one for testing purpose.

Have you done any sound checks with the mic and that recorder?
