Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

If you still have doubts, check to see what the job market is like for similar jobs in you area. Most likely you will find people working on this platform have many years of experience. Personally I have 30+ years on the IBM platform stating on a S/38. I have worked my way up to the version now referred to as the “Power” series. I am now doing more coding in the VB .NET world but still use the IBM on a daily basis as our company has all it’s legacy code here. There are no plans to do away with the system as the speed and security are a major factor for us. We are now developing mobile apps to allow remote access and more user friendly interfaces for users in the field.

    Safe? Safe for what? We don't know the future.

    There doesn't seem to be a technical problem for us to help with. You might ask in the 'Discussions' area.

    If you mean in terms of security, it is a pretty stable platform. The security flaws will more likely be with the programs and less than the OS. What are you referring to when you say "join"?

    There has been rumors for years it was on it's way out. If that was the case then there would be no new development by IBM. That has not been the case. With upgrades to the OS and adding of new features and now expanding support, I do not see it going away any time soon. It's a good starting point. A lot of companies still use these today. I currently am working on web services to interface the corp as/400 software to mobile apps.

    Yes, you chose wisely.

    There are growth plans @ IBM for this platform for many years to come.

    I've been in the field for 5 years. I agree with Charlie and Todd. I think we can still expect that there is further growth in the system. I am still getting job offers in AS400.  In my experience though, the problem that I had starting out was that there was no proper/professional training.  Since it is either it is too expensive or there are not that many as400 specialist and resources in my country.  Good luck on your new career.

    Yes it's safe. There are a lot of companies that have older legacy systems that need to be revamped. When you need to make changes to an older program, use the newer methods when ever possible. Things like the API's, BIF's and procedures. This will help performance and help clarify code as it may be able to eliminate some of the older ways of doing things. I started coding when it was a s/38 and we coded in RPG 1 & 2. It has come a long way and I see it still growing.

    @gaminia:

    This isn't a 'Jobs' forum. One thing a professional should be able to do is read things like a site FAQ and to follow the established guidelines.

    Also, unless it's temporary, you shouldn't post your email address in a public forum.
