So I'm currently at a university and I'm very big into gaming (both console and laptop gaming). Whenever I'm trying to play, the Wi-Fi in our department is not very good (very spotty) and it causes a ton of lagging. Is there anything I could do to improve it? Should I just buy a personal router instead of using the one the college gave us?

Speed is one thing a router may help with but only marginal. It’s the bandwidth that may be killing your performance. The more people on the network at the same time the slower it will get. If the connection keeps dropping then it’s signal strength. Depending on how many floors , wall and other obstacles the signal has to go through you may have a weak signal or even a dead spot where you cannot connect. You can by wi-fi range extenders and they do help with signal loss.
