What is IBM's suggested time between IPL's? And what good reasons are there for an IPL of a 24x7 production

I don't recall seeing IBM guidelines for IPL for years, at least not in terms of fixed periods of time. Usage varies so drastically across the ranges of system size, regular workloads, etc., that any older guidelines are probably far out of date.

It's probably been close to 20 years since I started doing either quarterly or semi-annual IPLs. These were usually scheduled in advance to coincide with group/cume PTF applications.

I agree with Raven. Long gone are the days of nightly or weekly IPL's.
A lot of the things an IPL does can now be done through controls and commands. IPL's basically did a lot of in-house cleaning of the system. As for a shop that is running 24/7, only you can make a decision as to when it works into your schedule best.

So neither of you think that the system should be (need be) IPL'd other than when applying CUM updates.

For us we IPL when doing system upgrades like CUM, new IBM OS release and when we update our corporate software to a new version. That's about it. About once every 6-8 months on average.

Hardware as recent as the Power System series should be well beyond any need for frequent IPLs. I still run a couple model 170s, and they usually get IPLed after power outages. A model 520 here is similar except that significant system software updates/upgrades have happened during this past decade.

However, you might consider IPLs as often as quarterly if there are scheduled downtimes available for the site. I'd only do this if IBM hardware support is known to be quickly available. The reason would be to push the system through full diagnostics. It can be better to know of problems that only surface during IPL; this might avoid surprises from hardware problems that are discovered during unscheduled downtimes. Even 24/7 sites may lose power at unpredicted times.
