I would like to take a backup of Oracle Database by using Unix scripts. Is it possible? If yes, please provide the details.

I do this to create a backup suitable for restoring on my live or a backup machine running Linux:

Force a log switch
Grab your current  archive log
alter database begin backup;
copy your files using OS (i.e. cp command)
alter database end backup
alter system archive log current
copy all the archives logs created from the start of your backup to now as you will need them when doing a a recover database.
