I’d read some article on recent data breaches and hacks. They may give you insight on what failures of current systems were used. Then I would design a system that patches those flaws and/or exploits that were taken advantage of. If this is for your final year project you should already have thorough knowledge of security basics.

If you do not have idea, so how did you accept this project. As this is a final yea project, why are you asking, rather asking your faculties. This is not the right path to learn something good. Moreover, there are several types of server, so what type  that you asked for, that is not revealed here. However, you can link here for some concepts: https://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/definition/web-server-security

You would think user and password combined and a IB issued secure device which creates a single use security code eliminates others from accessing your account

Other options include bio-metrics and the 2 factor authentication. But you should have already covered theses in class as well as their vulnerabilities.
