I am interested in what the state of the business is in IT asset management solutions: 1. What tools are you using? spreadsheets, internal tools like MS Access, bar code scanners, software solutions, auto discovery, ASP web based models, other. 1.a. Why? 2. What percent of your IT spend is in physical assets vs. intangible assets? 3. How do you link physical assets to the intangible assets? 4. How do you use this ongoing information? Lifecycle management, strategic and tactical resource planning and utilization, budgeting, other? Thanks.

For IT Assets and SLAs we use a combination of Maximizer for Lotus NOTES/Domino and customization to that product. It’s a complete COT for help desk management (work tickets, escalation, etc.) and asset tracking (hardware, software, vendors, warranties, etc.). Although some firms may use it “out-of-the-box” we have done some customization to it as well as are currently adding the ITIL processes to it to allow for service catalogues, programming/development change requests and so forth. What it can’t do currently is complete asset lifecylce management from the budgetary perspective. I’ve do doubt that this will be the next major customization to the application.

The beauty of the offering is 90% of the information needed (IE: user, location, asset and configuration) is automatically synchronised from Microsofts AD, Patch Management and monitoring tools. A CMDB is automatically populated in a 24 hour period and stays in synch real time without human updates. It updates itself automatically. The framework allows users to group assets to intangibles. Basically, what you list above as "Features" are all nice to have. However, they need to work together in an automated way to focus on the business process of employees/business services needing assets, procurement permitting assets to be purchased and then report against such assets / people / services during their life-cycle.
