My printer stopped printing black; I found an HP site which gave apparently helpful advice, but can no longer locate it. What should I do?

Not familiar with that model. But mine has an icon on the tool bar that shows ink levels and a bunch of other options. Check here to see if something became corrupted or the defaults were changed.

Thanks. I finally was able to print again by using the "Clean printhead" function in the "Tools" section of "Set-up" menu on the front panel of the printer.  But this only worked for about 25 pp of printing, and I had to repeat the clean, and also do the 2nd level of cleaning before I could print again.

I am guessing that this problem is due to a faulty print cartridge, which I had changed just a couple of weeks before, and which is now running down; my spare cartridge was bought at the same place, so I'm not too confident about it.

Both were apparently real HP cartridges, and bought in a reputable shop.

That would have been my next question. I have tried ink cartridges that were re-filled and have not had much luck. The only other question would be the printers environment. Is it located in a shop or other location where dirt, dust or grime may cause an issue? Lastly would be the paper quality. How old is the printer?

Thanks for your pointers.  In fact, the printer is in a domestic environment, a spare-bedroom-office, and doesn't get intensive use.  Not really dusty here.  And the printer is about 4 years old.
In the meantime, I have had no real trouble printing since I did the double cleaning action.  So perhaps I can forget about it now ... until the next time!

Just a friendly tip. I was looking to upgrade my printer a while back because a new one was cheaper that replacing all 6 ink cartridges. Mine is an HP all-in-one with 5 color and 1 black. I was told by the salesperson that most new printers have ink cartridges that are only about 30% capacity. They do this in case the printer gets returned. That way a full ink cartridge does not get wasted. Then you are looking to buy new ones in a month or 2 depending on how much printing you do. Nothing gained by upgrading for me so I kept my old one and just bought the new cartridges.

A couple of thoughts: If the vent tape didn't peel off correctly, the vent may partially clogged. Those particular cartridges have a foam in one side, so if they print alot of pages at once, the ink may not be sinking down through the foam quickly enough to keep up with the printing. If it is just the black causing the problem, then cartridge fault could be the issue.
