So I lent a friend my USB flash drive so he can add files to it. When I opened it up, all of the files are inaccessible (with very odd names - another language almost). I scanned everything with my antivirus and everything came back fine. But I still can't open them. What can I do?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Your best bet is to ask your friend what type of files he added to the USB. Also ask him if he is using any encryption software. He may have forgot and stored encrypted files on it. You may also want to check is he is using the same OS as you. Depending on the files he is trying to give you, they may be encrypted from the software vendor that created them to protect their copyrighted code.

First thing to do is try again, but making sure that proper procedure shuts down the USB before removing it from the system. If a proper removal is ensured and the files show cleanly, there's no need to look farther.
