I was given a memory stick to utilize for saving pictures etc. I put the USB stick in and it began installing a document that is an .ETL file. I did cancel the installation but now I need to know how to make sure it didn't harm my computer and if there is a way to format it.

The fastest and easiest way to open a .ETL file is to double-click on it. In this case, Windows will select the desired program to open your .ETL file. In case your .ETL file did not open, it is likely that your PC has not set at desired application to view or edit files with extensions .ETL. If your PC opens the .ETL file, but in the wrong program, you will need to change the settings in your Windows registry. In other words, Windows might associate the extensions of an .ETL file with the wrong program. We strongly recommend you scan your Windows registry for invalid file associations and other issues related with the registry.

Programs that can open the .ETL file

  • VLC media player
  • Notepad ++
  • Microsoft Windows Performance Analyzer
  • EDIUS
  • ThermaData Logger Application

    Who gave you the memory stick, and do you trust that is does not contain a virus? It sounds like there was a self-installing job on it. Ask them if this can be removed from the USB drive to free up space for you to use.
