How to modify URL without reloading page

Can I modify an URL of a current page without actually reloading the page? I need to access the portion before the # hash. Thanks so much for the help.

    I can, with any browser that I use. It's not clear why you can't.

    For example, for this page I can select just this part:

    • https://itknowledgeexchange.techtarget.com/itanswers/how-to-modify

    And I just used it without reloading the page. All that was needed was to select and copy only the limited part. If I had modified it, I would have avoided pressing _Enter_ or selecting any option to display the new page address.

    Copying portions or copying modified addresses isn't enough to cause a reload (in IE or FF or a few other browsers).
