I saved a program to a tar file with QSHELL on one system but how do you extract it on another system with QSHELL tar -cf /home/user/newobj.tar /QSYS.LIB/NEWOBJ.LIB/XYZPGM.SRVPGM

There are a number of site that can provide the steps to extract it to a different directory. You want it moved to another system. I'm curious as to what type of program you are trying to move and from what type of system and OS version. I see QSYS.LIB in you question. Are you are trying to move an i-series program object without the source code?

In short, you don't. Since a program (or service program) is not a *FILE object, the tar utility (and all similar ones) cannot output one. The system will not allow such writing to *PGM and *SRVPGM objects.

You could save the object into a savefile and transfer that instead. Once transferred, the savefile can be extracted; and the saved object can then be restored.
