I am charged to design a LAN for a private hospital. The client simply wants all the computers to be able to communicate with each other and also have a centralized control unit. He wants to use the Hospital management system software to keep all records and so on and also all the computers can access information from the software. What is the most effective way to go about that and also what do I need? E.g router, switch, server and so on. Also, I need help with the basic configurations. Thanks a lot.

What is "the Hospital management system software"? Without knowing that, there's no good answer possible.

hospital information system (HIS) is an element of health informatics that focuses mainly on the administrational needs of hospitals. In many implementations, a HIS is a comprehensive, integrated information system designed to manage all the aspects of a hospital's operation, such as medical, administrative, financial, and legal issues and the corresponding processing of services.

Yes, but what is it in the subject hospital? What package is it? Who is the vendor? What platform does it run on? What are its hardware requirements?

What I'm really interested in is to know the beststep by step way to connect 10 PCs via a switch and router so that they can share information between them. How do I configure them plus the server as well. I mentioned the hospital so as to be clear and to know the nature of environment we are working in. Pls help me out. Thanks.

Well, basically, you connect the router via the WAN link to the internet, connect the uplink from the switch to the router, and connect the server and the PCs to the switch.

But there's not much more that can be said without knowing more, most specifically about whatever mission-critical software (i.e., "the Hospital management system software") is and what it requires.

For example, what does it use for whatever database it maintains? Does it need an instance of MS SQL Server? DB2? Oracle? It possibly should have some separation from any domain controller. Or are you expecting a "domain"? If not, then what?

There are multiple potential questions and variations that might result in multiple configurations and other hardware. A hospital is going to have numerous regulatory requirements depending on country/jurisdiction as well as just the software package. But the package's requirements will provide a starting point on which to build up a working network structure.
