Upgrade what, the OS? Depending on how old the laptop is you may not be able to. I have an older Galaxy 8 that cannot the latest Android OS. Even the last 2 or 3 wont run. Provide more details on the make and model please.

I meant tablet in the post above not laptop.. There were some game and apps I want to play that would not run because of the older OS. My only option was get a new tablet.. I bought a generic 32g one for about 80 bucks and have had no issues running anything for about a year now.

From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > General tab > About device. Tap Update now. Tap OK to check for the latest software update for your device. If an update is available for your device a message will appear, tap Download to install the update. The update will begin to download on your device. After the download is complete tap Install to install the new update. After the installation is complete tap OK to reboot your tablet. If that does not work and it's a Samsung tablet check out this link for the Kies software for updating.

That does not work there is no software update for the tablet. I was giving the tablet to someone. The internet works fine. The apps do not work and even the google play store does not work. I thought updating the software would make the apps work. I even tried resetting it and the apps still do not work.

The tablet model and the installed Android version are missing from the question. Without those, it's not possible to know what might be done. Please add details for us to work from.

First of all take all necessary backups, if any. Open the Tablet manufacturer’s official website on your system. After entering the page, just follow links to its support/downloads page. Keep in mind, it may enter specific device information/register the tablet to access software updates. Next download/install device management software whatever they provide. Again back to the website. Now search for available updates. If any, the update(s) come in a downloadable file that can install using the device management software or interface. Next connect the tablet to the desktop using data cable or whatever medium you have. Now open the application, that you installed. Locate the update command. Click on the update command & it will start the update process. Next follow on screen instructions to complete the process.

Moreover, you can update the Tablet, through Wi-Fi connection. Connect your tablet to Wi-Fi. If this is not automatically connected, select a Wi-Fi network and enter a password, if necessary. While updating Android over Wi-Fi is the simplest way to do the same.
