A user deleted a file on our server from his workstation. I tried to recover this file but I can't find it and I don't have shadow copy on my server. How can I recover this file?
I’ve done this very thing before so I know exactly what you’re experiencing. The only way to recover a deleted file off of a server that I’m aware of is to restore from backup or to use a data recovery tool such as Davory on the server itself. Note that if you have any sort of file-level compression or encryption on that server volume, the recovery process will not work.
I accidentally deleted an entire folder off the drive, I was able to simply add a new folder with the same exact file name and retrieve the previous version. Felt like I had won the first prize once I recovered my deleted documents.
I know this is a very old thread - however I have just found out you can right click on the file or the folder and select "restore previous versions". You will get a message saying working on it - and before long, If your server has a good backup structure, then you should be presented with a list of older versions of your files/folder.
Because of likely activity on a server, the only good, reliable method is by restoring from a backup. Recovery methods for a single-user/personal system are less likely to be successful. A server should be keeping at least one previous version at all times because differences in how servers are used by multiple users.
I know the feeling of losing important files. That is why I searched on google the moment i lost something on my workstation, to look for help. I found Acethinker Disk Recovery to be really helpful when that happened. I don't know if this will help anyone, but hopefully someone will find this useful.
Go to the folder from where the file was deleted. Now right click to open Properties. It opens Properties dialog box. Next click on the Previous Versions tab. This way it may possible to recover a previous version of one/ more files. However this depends on Server OS.
There is no DELETE folder on my computer. Unfortunately I deleted important email. Any idea to recover this email from DELETE folder which doesn't exist?
@ZbigiP, what email client is there? This is you office/ for personal use? The procedure may vary email software to software. Have you updated recently? More information is needed.
@ZbigIP: What email are you using, Outlook, Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail or another? It may be possible but I am doubtful. Usually if you delete it, it's gone. More so the longer the time has lapsed since the delete was done.
hi, i know this is long ago, but i have some trouble. i accidentally rewrite a file on a server without any backup and i want my previous files back but there is no way im seeing it again. i tried all the methods above but i got no results. please help
@franckbob62: If you have no back up and you have overwritten a file there may be little you can do to recover at this point unfortunately. How was the file overwritten, using SQL or some other method?
Without backup, there probably is no recovery. Depending on how it was 'rewritten', it might be possible to use full disk recovery software to find the previous version. But how to do it would depend on what kind of file it was, how it was 'rewritten', what recovery program was used and possibly other factors.
Also, the data itself might be overwritten. That would happen if processes have been active on the server and other data has been written to the same disk. The data would then be gone.
Shoot, none of these sounds positive at all.. I’m totally screwed, i had a file with the identical name in that folder, I copy and pasted it in there and clicked on merge files by accident. After releasing what I’ve done, i the pre (command Z) to try to undo what I have just done but after entering the folder again some files in it were missing and some files were there still. So I was very confused as to how that even happened? I’m praying for miracle at this point.
