How can the cloud and BYOD work in the healthcare space?

I am a technology consultant working in the digital health space, one of the biggest areas that interest me the most is the Cloud and BYOD. In Healthcare, especially in the UK - from what other consultants have told me - the cloud is a hated thing and a BYOD policy is non existent. The NHS is under pressure for cost savings, outsourcing some business functions to the cloud would be a good move - would be very difficult and tedious to roll out but I am interested to know thoughts from others on how cloud and BYOD success can be achieved.

IMO, there is no technology in the industry that doesn’t have any risk. The same associated with Cloud and BYOD. To achieve success with this combination it is important to have standard monitoring system, involving and analyzing infrastructure performance and events to recognize and respond to incidents in real-time.

Combing the two in my opinion opens up too many security issues. With the HIPPA laws here in the U.S. I think the BYOD is the biggest problem. Too much outside risk to the network. Granted you can have policies in place but time and time again I see it being violated and no reprimand to violators.

BYOD, cloud, you name it - any such technologies and their associated security controls are only as good as their implementation and management. Cost savings versus compliance versus business risks - they're all choices that business leaders must make, ideally based on good information provided by IT and security staff.
