    You really only need to protect your computer if it's connected to the internet. If you are buying a program or a game at the store and load and run it at home without connecting to the internet you should be okay. You can use the protection features of Windows, but I advise getting some free anti virus software at least for some added protection. Programs like AVG anti-virus, Malwarebytes, Spybot search and destroy, Ad-aware to name a few.
