Correct about ESM - Rather than using Outlook to read messages, you can use Outlook Web Access which elimintes the need to create an Outlook profile etc.
http://<servername>/exchange/alias
If you have Exchange administrative rights (which you must have if you are using ESM) you can authenticate to a mailbox and see all mail and folders.
