How can I get my MP4 files to be read?

I've been doing game casts and recording files. The output format is .mp4 and they have read no problem on my PC. However, upon booting my PC today none of them are readable on windows media player (i use it for editing), windows media player, quicktime, etc. I get all kinds of errors saying the format is not supported/missing codecs. What the heck happened to disable them from being read? How can I fix this? I haven't downloaded or installed any new bizarre software over the last few days or anything. I just want to be able to edit my videos and view them. Can someone help?
