Hi, Can someone hack your computer and then set up a website to make it look like it's coming from your IP address? My laptop has no security because I never used it for banking so I didn't get any. Thanks!

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

First I would say get some antivirus and firewall protection. You say you do not do banking but have you ever ordered any thing shopping on line ? They could steal your credit card info.  Something like the free ones Zone Alarm is a good firewall and AVG is a pretty good free antivirus program. As for someone setting up a website that looks like it’s from your IP, what were the reasons?  is your IP{ address static? What happens if you key your IP address into the URL search, does that website come up? If you have a wireless network is it secured? Someone could be using your connection without you knowing..

"...I never used it for banking..."

Doing financial functions is a very strong reason for securing a computer.

But not doing financial functions is not a good reason not to secure a system. Your computer should be secured no matter what you do with it as long as it has an active IP interface that accesses internet sites.

Your (unsecured) computer might be taken over without you ever knowing it, and used for illegal activities. It can be caused to do things that would then appear to come from you since it came from your computer and out of your address.

Numerous other bad things can happen. You should not make active connections to the internet without at least anti-virus software and a decent firewall.

Hi and many thanks for your reply. I will instal a firewall & thank you for that advice. My ip is dynamic I allow my guests to use my internet ( I am a BnB) Not sure if the web page will show up on my computer as I don't know the page. I just received a letter from the police asking me to go for a formal interview. A site was set up and it was about someone I know. Now this person is an ex police officer and I didn't do it. I was away at the time of incident and can prove it but I really do think this person has caked me to get me in trouble. For this person to find a site relating to them they must of googled themselves and that is strange. If you google yourself then you're expecting to find something. Is is possible for this person to have hacked my computer or IP address in any way? What if they emailed me with a virus could they get in to my computer and make it look I'd done this? Thanks again :-)

First, if something is created on the internet, there's no such thing as being "away at the time of incident". You can do it from practically any place in the world. If anyone else did it, they were also "away" at the time. You could control what your system does just like someone else could.

E-mail is a common way of spreading infections. Web pages that have been modified with invisible parts are also common. In either case (and others) getting remote control is easily possible for unprotected systems, especially Windows PCs since so many different attacks are widely known.

Googling yourself is a common thing to do. Perhaps more likely for a negative item would be a friend, acquaintance or relative running across the item and sending you a message.

It's possible that your PC was hacked, but unlikely. First it's not necessary. It's also easier to get it done without hacking your PC.

Regardless, there's nothing you can do about the past incident. Protecting your equipment and your network from future incidents is all you can do.

Thanks. The thing is it was my dynamic IP address used and I know it wasn't me. I can't work it out and it's baffling me. I didn't have protection My email kept sending a funny link to people which was added to the bottom of my emails but not there when I sent them. People used to ask me what the link was for. I don't understand how a website can be made from my IP address. Thanks again

If it's "dynamic", then it's not "yours". It can be used by anyone who subscribes to the same ISP. That's a primary characteristic of "dynamic" addressing. The address gets assigned by the ISP to the next subscriber who needs an address.

You can get a different address from the ISP's address pool every time you connect, and someone else will get that address whenever it's not actively connected.

If you wish not consider any security on your laptop, and when you buy any legal thing from on-line store, it is better to go for COD (cash on delivery). However, it is recommended to have some kind of security/ firewall/ anti-virus for your laptop protection.
