My friend and I are working on a demo site and we're storing images inside an image column using SQL Server. Is this a good thing to do? If not, what should I do? Will it affect performance on the site?

Personally I'd store a link to the image, not the actual image. I'm sure others have their preferences and depending on the size of the database. I'd be curious as to how Amazon or E-Bay does this.
