We require a full network system audit check at workplace - our IT department personnel had a conflict of interest so to confirm data is secure and private we require a comprehensive check for any backdoors; passwords need to be changed; back ups required. Work at a personal injury law firm therefore privacy is of utmost importance. How should we start?

It sounds like your best bet would be to reach out to an independent information security consultant who specializes in performing these types of tests. I do this work and there are other options out there. If you wish to perform this type of work on your own, I wrote an entire book about it called Hacking For Dummies. Here are some articles on security testing I wrote that might be beneficial as well. In essence, the process involves knowing what you've got, understanding how it's at risk, and then putting together a plan to do something about those risks.
