IP address
Is this possible? Back story...someone (we think we know who) opened an IG account using my 12 year old daughter's full name. They friended several of her friends and they are writing inflammatory statements on my posts as well as others. I work in social and this could get me fired. More importantly, they are speaking as my 12 year old daughter in ways that will get her hurt physically at school, kicked out of cheerleading, and/or expelled. Yes, I can report them to IG, but this is a crime and I want them caught. Bullying is evil and we need to stand up. We can't just boldly send a message with a link to click because they won't do that. Can I obtain the IP address any other way?

Highly unlikely. Your best bet is to notify Instagram of the issue a see if they will cancel the account. If they are posting things on the site that violate the website’s terms then it should not be a big deal. Report them and see what happens. You may also want to check with local law enforcement. There are more and more laws about bullying and harassment to prevent things like this. They may have more clout in getting the account cancelled.. This is one of the problems with social media. Anyone can open an account as anybody if the names not taken. There is no validation as to the users’ real identity. Some site will send a text message to a cell phone to verify the account. If that is the case then you may be able to find the person responsible. Good luck.

First of tracing an Instagram IP is almost impossible, without hacking or other illegal way. However, legal body/ local administrator can do that, if a matter so serious. Tough uses IP is invisible however, depending on the server Instagram uses, the server/ Instagram can track IP address. If they link user account and your public IP together in their DB.

You can inform prior to your kid's school about this matter in detail. Next ask help from your local admin authorities for the same. Without solid evidence, it is difficult to prove the occurrence.

I understand that and I have contacted Instagram, but that won't stop this person from repeatedly doing the same thing. This person has created a fake account in a minor's full name (impersonation of a minor = illegal), they have posted death threats on my page (cyberbullying = illegal), and have made defamation of character claims against my husband (illegal), again, all in the name of a 12-year-old child. We have reported it to the school as well. I've taken all steps at the recovery of the account and am waiting on those responses (email, etc), but I still feel that the IP address should be able to be tracked. Everything leaves a footprint, even Instagram!

It's highly unlikely that an IP address will be of any use. The majority of IP addresses change regularly, perhaps as often as a router is turned off/on and can be more frequent. Further, with so many hot-spots available, even a static address will often be misleading.

Best protection is the filing of official complaints, both with Instagram and with whatever authorities are appropriate for your region. Create a complaint paper trail for later reference if needed.

@Cigossett: Digital foot prints are harder to track today. If someone is using a VPN to hide their identity or if they are using free public wi-fi. The other thing to remember your IP address changes all the time with most ISP's. Unless you are paying for a static IP.

It is possible only by reporting it to cybercrime cell in your city who will further take the matter officially with Instagram to trace the location and person in a legal way.

this is a little tricky just because they have to click on a link through messaging. But it's the only way I could find. It's all explained in this link I pasted below. https://www.geosurf.com/blog/how-to-find-ip-address-from-instagram/

The above link can potentially give "an Internet address". There's no way to know if that address has any relationship to the device that the person is using. That becomes almost a zero chance if the person is doing even minimal work to hide.

Any link that claims to give an IP address might be valid at that time only,  as IP address change all the time unless you have a static IP. Most people don't have these. People can also hide their temporary IP behind a VPN so I don't see how the link would be give that out.
