Files missing on external hard drive

I have a USB plugin external hard drive that I store all my music in. When I had an older computer, I would have problems with music not showing up (whole artists would disappear) They would simply not show up when the item was plugged in, even though I knew they were on there. iTunes was having a fit! It could never find the files. I now have a new computer and a similar thing is happening. Basically when I load iTunes, it struggles to find any media. Most importantly: when I open the external hard drive file via 'my computer', many files don't show up: example, I have 4 foo fighters albums saved on the hard drive but only 'wasting light' appears. However, when I open Windows Media Player'.. there it all is! And I am listening to 'There is nothing left to lose' right now. I am pretty sure I was able to put these 'missing' albums on my iPod last time I updated it, however iTunes does not appreciate me saving my songs on an inconsistent location. So, I am really trying to understand why this might happen. I have tried to change things in the 'view' folder setting, but nothing seems to work. I have done the unplug, re-start and refresh. If I am trying to access songs via iTunes, but I cannot find the original file because it is 'missing'. Any help would be great! Thanks :)

In windows media player, open your play list, right click on the song and click on "open file location". This will tell you where the file is located. It may not be where you think. If it's where you said, on the external drive and it still can't be seen, report back.
