Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

There is not enough information in the question.  I just encountered this issue.  Do you want to do a system restore, or a system board reset?  The two are not the same.  The system board reset will reset the system board back to the Factory Settings minus any Chipset or Biios upgrades that may have been done. This does not affect the hard drive.  The system restore will wipe the drive and reinstall the O/S or it will reset the system back to an earlier date.  Either way you are going to lose data on the hard drive.

Generally factory settings are related to mobile/tab/iPad etc. Yes, you can also do the same. but it is like a recovery mode while a PC/laptop could not boot/properly or virus effected. You may loose all of your data/files/folders/software setup/browser's bookmarks etc. Before doing that, it is safe to take all necessary backups to an external media. Actually what happened with your laptop. Is it so necessary to do a factory reset. Please come back with more details, if it will helpful for you.

Why do you need to reset your HP laptop? Today it's a tough thing as most vendors do not ship a CD with the OS. There may be a partition on your HD that has it. Maybe we can help you fix your issues without having to wipe the slate. Are you looking to sell this and do not want anything but the original OS on the laptop?

If it is under warranty/guarantee, and you forgot password for bios/setup, so don't play with your system (or don't open its back cover/battery etc.), rather get help from HP's service center/call HP's technician. They are the better persons to help you.
