External monitor goes to extended display when opening Windows 10 laptop

My work laptop is connected to an external monitor. When I leave for the day, I keep the lid closed and put it in sleep mode. For the past few days when I open it up, the monitor is not the primary display (which it should be). It's on an extended display. So I have to close the laptop and open it again (that usually does the trick) but it's getting very annoying. Any way to stop this? I'm on Windows 10.

Probably there is something misconfigured. You can change which screen is the primary screen in the windows by using Screen Resolution Control panel. Right click on the desktop. You can then easily switch between extending display/ mirroring display, or only using a single display by holding the windows key & pressing P at the same time. Also if you have updated recently, check for pending update in windows update history.
